Upon its release in September 2022, Obscene: The Dublin Scandal topped the Irish iTunes charts, reached the top 40 in the United States and was one of the most listened to podcasts on BBC Sounds in the UK. It received a slew of glowing press reviews. The Irish Times described it as “storytelling at its most crafted.” A review in the Spectator Magazine wrote: “Obscene:The Dublin Scandal has classy production values, a great, likeable narrator in Adrian Dunbar, high-profile talking heads such as Colm Toibin and Fintan O’Toole and a post-Succession theme tune of cellos weeping over a loose, reverbed drumkit that promises clever twists and high-concept suspense.” Listener reviews were just as favourable, describing the series as “gripping,” “compelling,” “superbly made” and “enlightening.”
