The Newsreader set in a smoky, high pressure Australian newsroom in the late 80’s, for a complex & compelling blend of fact & fiction that swiftly became the most broadly viewed & awarded drama of the year on the ABC, Australia’s national broadcaster. Set in the fictional offices of ‘The News At Six’, the series follows vivid characters as they break the biggest news events. The historical timeline is completely accurate & was achieved via a breakthrough collaboration between the ABC’s drama & news archive departments. Granted access to raw camera footage from the era, the writing team pored over hundreds of hours of news archive material, looking for ways to build the newsroom stories & progress the characters. Parallel to this, the ensemble of characters was carefully developed to offer a nuanced look at sexuality, race, power & mental health. Research contacts in all areas carefully consulted to generate a real sense of verisimilitude & truth.
