Kyla Harris, We Might Regret This
Roughcut TV, Village Roadshow
UK
- Best Performance in a Comedy
After an accident as a young teen, which meant that she’d be a wheelchair user for life, Kyla Harris decided to abandon her dream of becoming an actor, having never seen anyone like herself represented on screen before. In We Might Regret This however, she makes a remarkable debut in the lead role. Bringing authenticity, charm and depth to Freya - a complex and flawed character who we root for across the series; Kyla masterfully balances humour with emotional depth. Making us laugh one moment and deeply empathise the next. Kyla’s capacity for profound vulnerability also sets her apart. This is particularly notable in the portrayal of intimate moments such as catheterisation and rarely seen representations of disability and sex, nudity and personal care. Her bravery and ability to find nuance, sensitivity and comedy in these moments lies at the very heart of the shows success. Kyla’s performance subverts cliched stereotypes of disabled characters, and shows her considerable talent.
