The cache of letters at The National Archives in the UK were released a while back but no one had really pulled them together to tell a more nuanced story of Singapore’s separation from Malaysia. The producers sifted through hundreds of these letters, trawled through material from oral archives and various memoirs, and spoke to some descendants of the key figures involved. Piecing everything together, they were able to paint a more personal and emotional, and even fraught picture of that momentous fracture that created the nation of Singapore.
