Idris Elba: Our Knife Crime Crisis

The ambition of this film was to change the way we think about knife crime. An average of 4 people are stabbed to death every week. Idris Elba sees this an urgent issue that must be tackled, and a social problem that affects everyone, not just black or brown communities. Ministry of Justice statistics show that 69% of people convicted for carrying a knife are white. This film tells the story of 2024, as Idris meets grieving families, teenage knife carriers, child inmates at Feltham YOI, murder detectives as well as the Prime Minister and the King. Remit challenges: We wanted to humanise perpetrators and help the audience understand the context that led to their actions. We tried to show that they are not ‘bad people’, they were let down by their families and the system. We can’t just exclude them from schools and bang them up, we need to catch them early, see them as kids who
