Motherland is a comedy drama full of hilarity, often achieved through dramatic and emotional character/story elements. This series tackles serious subjects like cancer, racism and divorce – it deals with these respectfully and through emotional scenes, but balances this well with brilliant comedy. Motherland S3 was produced during the pandemic. Extra covid costs meant reducing the series to 5 episodes, so there was a big late rewrite to replot storylines. During prep we had to constantly rewrite in response to issues like availabilities plus the need to keep key cast socially distanced. Since we were filming when schools were open we had to return to the school each weekend and work everything around that.
