At the heart of Uprising is the testimony of the survivors of a deadly fire, with the worst loss of life from an incident like this at the time, however, at the time, this tragedy in Britain’s black community was treated as if it were an insignificant local news story, something that could be dismissed or ignored. But as the survivors and others who lived through these terrible times relate, many of whom are people speaking for the first time – this was in fact a powerful and highly significant period of British history. Their powerful emotional testimony relates an interwoven story of a community - mostly young people - under almost constant attack, running the gauntlet of far-right politics and intensive policing but still finding joy and solace in music and friendship.
